Position Overview 

The Manager, Data Engineering will lead and optimize our internal data engineering function, focused on operational capabilities and efficiency. This role involves overseeing the development and maintenance of scalable data systems that drive strategic decision-making and operational efficiency. The ideal candidate will be a dynamic leader with a deep understanding of data engineering practices, a proven ability to manage complex projects, and strong collaborative skills. This position offers a strategic opportunity to shape our data infrastructure and drive innovative solutions that align with our business goals.

Knowledge and Application:

  • Extensive knowledge of data engineering tools and technologies, such as Hadoop, Spark, Boomi, SQL, and ETL frameworks.
  • Proven experience with data warehousing solutions and cloud-based data platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud).
  • Strong understanding of data modeling, data architecture, and best practices in data management.
  • Ability to apply advanced data engineering concepts to solve complex problems and drive innovative solutions.
  • Develop metrics and monitoring systems to track data system performance and identify areas for improvement.
  • Address data-related issues and bottlenecks promptly to maintain system reliability and efficiency.
  • Implement and optimize data engineering technologies and methodologies, including cloud-based solutions and big data tools.
  • Ensure data quality, integrity, and security through robust engineering practices
  • Develop and execute a strategic roadmap for data engineering aligned with organizational objectives and industry trends.
  • Design, build, and maintain scalable and efficient data pipelines, warehouses, and lakes.

Complexity and Problem Solving:

  • Manage and resolve complex data engineering challenges involving large-scale data systems and intricate data workflows.
  • Analyze and address technical issues related to data infrastructure, ensuring robust and scalable solutions.
  • Develop strategic solutions for optimizing data processing and integration, considering both immediate and long-term impacts.

Discretion and Impact: 

  • Provide input and recommendations for decisions regarding data engineering strategies, technologies, and processes that impact organizational efficiency and data-driven insights.
  • Influence and shape data infrastructure and strategies that support key business functions and strategic initiatives.
  • Handle sensitive and high-impact data projects, ensuring compliance with data governance and security policies.
  • Focus efforts on tactical implementation and project execution
  • Ensures the team’s work aligns with strategic goals as defined by Senior Leaders.

Collaboration and Interaction:

  • Report strategic and tactical progress, issues, risks, and accomplishments to a VP-level audience
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including data scientists, analysts, IT, and business units, to understand data needs and deliver effective solutions.
  • Communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders, ensuring alignment on data requirements and project goals.
  • Work closely with delivery partners responsible for the presentation layers of the delivery as well as with peers that own the data to be delivered.
  • Ensure alignment with Product Owner roadmap and project priorities
  • Influence strategic direction of company data engineering best practices and standards while upholding all data privacy, security, and data access restrictions. 

Management and Supervision: 

  • Lead and mentor a team of data engineers, providing guidance, support, and professional development opportunities.
  • Work with your Senior Leader to define performance goals, conduct regular reviews, and manage team dynamics to ensure high performance and engagement.
  • Provide input so decisions can be made around data engineering project prioritization, ensuring deadlines are met and aligned with business needs.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to define project scope, deliverables, and timelines.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
  • 5+ years of experience in data engineering, with a minimum of 2 years in a managerial or leadership role.
  • Demonstrated expertise in managing data engineering projects and teams, with a strong track record of delivering complex data solutions.
  • Exceptional leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to thrive in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.

Preferred skills

  • 8+ years of experience in data engineering 
  • Data Science and AI experience
  • Experience working with similar size companies or larger

This role can be performed from any office in the US. The pay range for this position is $114,000-211,000/yr; however, base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. This position is eligible for an annual bonus and restricted stock unit grant based on individual performance in addition to a full range of benefits outlined here. This information is provided per the relevant state and local pay transparency laws for the location in which this position will be performed. Base pay information is based on market location.
