At Paylocity, Software Engineering Managers are technology focused leaders that act as the bridge between an engineering team’s outcomes and the business strategies driving those outcomes. It is a critical role in our Product and Technology organization. This key role serves as manager of a team of roughly 5 - 10 engineers and is responsible for driving workstream focused outcomes in our financial domain, while working to achieve a high level of performance and efficiency. This position requires commitment to exceptional results, a strong desire for continuous improvement and the ability to build a collaborative culture within the team.

We leverage AWS for infrastructure and continue to evolve our on-prem applications to the cloud, with backend applications in C# and front-end applications in ReactJS. 


As an Engineering Manager, you will manage a small, high performing Agile team to scale the product. 

You will be responsible for making sure the architecture scales to business need and code quality and efficiency meets business requirements.

Who you are: 

Engineering is the function that applies principles and techniques of engineering, mathematics, and computer/data science to the design, development, and testing of applications. The Product & Technology engineering family consists of software development, testing, database, devops, virtualization & network. 

  • Enthusiastic about developing the best software available and providing the ultimate customer experience 
  • An advocate for continuous improvement of our software development process 
  • Interested in staying current by applying new technologies 
  • Able to work in a collaborative environment with a willingness to share your ideas 
  • Able to work independently on modules and complete tasks with high quality and contribute to high velocity, but unafraid to seek out suggestions from other team members 
  • Excited to work on cutting-edge technology 

During the first six months, you will: 

  • Independently lead an engineering team in the development or enhancement of products, solutions, and processes 
  • Understand, facilitate, and evolve the core processes of team (development, planning, on-call rotations, bug triage, metrics review, etc.) 
  • Empower and unblock a team to deliver impact at a high velocity by establishing efficient execution and operational processes and hold the team accountable while cultivating a healthy team environment 
  • Coach and mentor team members toward achieving expectations and progressing in their career 
  • Work with a single team and product partners within a single domain that may contain multiple products or applications 
  • Possibly own a domain that has multiple dependencies or outcomes. 
  • Own the overall health and engineering quality of the product(s) owned within a domain or function 
  • Independently lead the activities of a team towards execution on projects/goals that are often beyond the scope of immediate team 

Required Experience: 

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science or a similar technical field 
  • Fluency in C# and relational databases (SQL, NoSQL) 
  • Proficiency in AWS(preferred) , Azure or GCP  
  • Help team in code reviews and make the right architecture decisions. 
  • Must be adaptable to change and have a willingness to learn
  • Must have a strong sense of curiosity
  • Must commit to their role and take responsibility for their tasks
  • Must be able to work effectively in an agile and team environment 
  • Must be effective and creative in problem solving 
  • Good to have Fluency in JavaScript or Typescript and in a modern frontend framework such as React

This role can be performed from any office in the US. The pay range for this position is $129k - $240k/yr; however, base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. This position is eligible for an annual bonus and restricted stock unit grant based on individual performance in addition to a full range of benefits outlined here. This information is provided per the relevant state and local pay transparency laws for the location in which this position will be performed. Base pay information is based on market location.
