About the team:
The Staff Engineer Software Testing will be a senior technical leader for quality within the Airbase team, a recently acquired startup now operating as part of Paylocity. This role comes with end-to-end ownership of quality practices for Airbase in a lean Quality Engineering team. You’ll define and scale testing frameworks, represent QA in cross-functional discussions, and mentor engineers while fostering a quality-first mindset across the team. This is a high-impact role for someone who thrives on building from the ground up and shaping how quality is defined across the product lifecycle.

Core Responsibilities
- Architect enterprise-wide test automation frameworks and strategies
- Define and implement comprehensive test strategies at system level
- Drive adoption of testing best practices across multiple teams
- Optimize test processes and automation to accelerate delivery cycles
- Provide expert-level feedback on system design and architecture
- Coordinate cross-team test execution and strategy alignment
- Develop and track quality metrics to measure effectiveness
- Identify and address quality gaps across product areas
- Lead technical discussions and architectural decisions for testing infrastructure
- Drive quality-first culture initiatives organization-wide
Team Collaboration
- Serve as the senior-most quality voice within the Airbase team, partnering with product, engineering, and design to ensure quality is baked in from concept to release
- Contribute and participate in opportunities for technical innovation and experimentation
- Collaborate with product owners on feature requirements
- Participate in hiring and interviewing processes
Growth & Development
- Lead technical discussions and architectural decisions for test automation
- Mentor junior engineers in testing best practices and automation
- Drive quality initiatives across multiple teams
- Represent Airbase quality engineering in Paylocity-wide forums, sharing context and aligning on broader quality strategies
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field
- Minimum 7+ years of experience in software testing and automation
Technical Skills
- Expert-level proficiency in automated testing frameworks and tools
- Experience with cloud-based testing environments
- Deep understanding of performance and security testing concepts
- Version control systems expertise (Git preferred)
- Database concepts and SQL knowledge
- Deep expertise in multiple programming languages and testing frameworks (Cypress, Playwright, Selenium)
- Strong understanding of software architecture patterns and system design
- Experience leading enterprise-wide technical initiatives
- Proven track record of developing scalable test solutions
- Strong technical leadership and mentoring skills
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities
- Experience with agile development methodologies
- Strong proficiency in CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices
Physical Requirements
- Ability to sit for extended periods: The role requires sitting at a desk or workstation for long periods, typically 7–8 hours a day.
- Use of computer and phone systems: The employee must be able to operate a computer, use phone systems, and type. This includes using multiple software programs and inquiries simultaneously.
